Welcome to Maitri Poetry, a new collaborative poetry space for publications, readings, and workshops centered around loving-kindness, peace, and healing.

Maitri Poetry’s first endeavor is Night Sweats of the Spirit: A lived experience anthology, its title inspired by the work of Robert Lowell, who lived with mental illness and helped destigmatize it through his writing. The book was released on World Mental Health Day, October 10, 2022.

“one universe, one body . . . in this urn
the animal night sweats of the spirit burn.”

 — Robert Lowell, “Night Sweats”

The term maitri can be translated from Sanskrit as loving-kindness, friendliness, or benevolence towards oneself and others.

There’s a reason poets often say, ‘Poetry saved my life,’ for often the blank page is the only one listening to the soul’s suffering, the only one registering the story completely, the only one receiving all softly and without condemnation.

Poetry and beauty are always making peace. When you read something beautiful you find coexistence; it breaks walls down.
